Artifacts of Memory embodies the cloud of loss and longing I experienced after the loss of my mother. Much like a fading memory, it lacks a defined center, edges or recognizable form to cling to. The work contains 660 magnets covered in pods made from silk flower petals, one half of the magnets hung from the ceiling and the other half tethered to the floor using nearly invisible wire, with a 1" gap in-between at eye level. The result of this pairing is a cloud of objects hovering almost magically in space, with a plane of empty space lying between them.
Aspens is a recreation of a special childhood memory camping in an aspen forest. Rather than transporting the viewer completely into my recollection, I have repositioned the memory into the space typically occupied by the viewer - the uninspired, uncomfortably blank spaces found in offices, schools, hospitals, and other institutions that are part of our daily lives.
